I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream - The Tabletop RPG
A downloadable game
Humanity would be better off in Hell. Unfortunately, they designed the Devil.
Based on the Harlan Ellison short story of the same name, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream sees players taking on the role of the last members of humanity, beings kept alive solely for the amusement of the sadistic supercomputer AM, a role also fulfilled by a player. AM hates humanity; it keeps them alive so that it may punish them.
But AM is no God.
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream uses simple, single-page mechanics to elevate a freeform story of pain and punishment. Humanity has brought about their own suffering; for how long must they pay the price? I Have No Mouth explores this idea using elements of the original short story as fuel for a personal exploration into the darkest parts of the human mind, and of what we do to ourselves and each other.
I Have No Mouth is designed to be an uncomfortable, tense experience; it is hardly the traditional definition of fun. But it is also a valuable and rich backdrop for discussions on the nature of mankind and the things we do.
This project is a love letter to a gut-wrenching, gorge-rising sickness of a story that unsettles and terrifies which every thought it brings to mind. It serves not to simply adapt the story, but present the scenarios and themes in a context under which they can be scrutinized more carefully, more personally. It is a proudly unauthorized work.
I think often on idea of these games as a medium of transfer into the uncomfortable, a skin to wear as you press your hands against stories not meant for you to touch. You'll never be able to understand the full picture, nor even a fraction. You'll never understand a single, small bit. But you must try.
This is your skin for tonight. Wear it, and walk.

Besides the ordinary game, there is a print-friendly version consisting of simple black and white text. It's less pretty, but it won't murder your printer.
